What is WebP?

WebP is a new image format for the Web. It was developed by Google in 2010.

This format can save files up to 34% smaller comparing to the JPEG or PNG files. The smaller and richer images make the web faster.

The types of compressions

WebP allows to save images in both lossy and lossless compression.

Extension: .webp

MIME type: image/webp

Disadvantages

WebP is not supported by all image viewers and all broveser.

WebP is natively supported in Google Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Opera browsers.
